Wild Heart Yoga Canmore: A Steep but Rewarding Hike

Located just a 22-minute drive southeast of Canmore in Kananaskis Country, the Heart Mountain trail is a challenging yet rewarding hike that offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. As an avid yogi and nature lover, I was excited to tackle this steep scramble with my husband.

The up-and-back hike has an elevation gain of 745 meters (2444 feet), while the loop trail has an elevation gain of 940 meters (3084 feet). We chose to hike the horseshoe loop trail, which took us seven hours to complete. Although we're not very fit, we stopped for lunch and plenty of photos along the way.

For those who are more experienced hikers, you can opt for a ridge walk that lets you summit three peaks, covering a total distance of 10.3 kilometers (6.4 miles). Alternatively, you can hike up to Heart Creek, which is a great option for families with young children or those looking for an easier hike.

The trail starts at the Heart Creek Trailhead, and since it's located in a provincial park, you don't need a national park pass to access it. The trailhead is easily accessible via Google Maps, and follow the signs for Heart Creek from the Lac des Arcs exit.

As we hiked, I felt like I was 'feeling the burn' for several days afterwards - a testament to the challenging terrain. However, the stunning views and sense of accomplishment made it all worth it. If you're looking for a unique hiking experience in Alberta, look no further than the Heart Mountain trail. Just be sure to bring plenty of water, snacks, and sunscreen!
